Offered by the painter Claude Monet to France the very day after the armistice of November 11, 1918 as a symbol of peace, the Water Lilies were installed according to his plans at the musée de L’Orangerie in 1927, a few months after his death.
Dotted with aquatic plants, including countless water lilies which give their name to this great painting cycle from the end of the painter’s life, this immense composition takes us to the heart of a continuum of distributed time and space, in the two rooms of the musée de L’Orangerie evoking the soft light of morning.
