Johan Christian Clausen Dahl (1788–1857) was a pioneering Norwegian Romantic painter and one of the foremost landscape artists of the 19th century. Born in Bergen, he later settled in Dresden, where he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and a close friend of Caspar David Friedrich. Celebrated for his dramatic and atmospheric depictions of Norway’s mountains, fjords, and coastline, Dahl is widely regarded as the founder of modern Norwegian landscape painting.
