Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891) was a Dutch painter and printmaker whose atmospheric landscapes played an important role in the development of Impressionism. Born in the Netherlands, he spent much of his career between France and his native country, capturing rivers, coastlines, and city scenes with a remarkable sensitivity to light and changing weather. His spontaneous brushwork and luminous treatment of atmosphere strongly influenced artists such as Claude Monet, earning him recognition as an important precursor to the Impressionist movement.
