"PICTURE WITH A CIRCLE" CHANGED EVERYTHING: THIS VERY PAINTING IS GENERALLY HELD TO BE THE FIRST PURELY ABSTRACT WORK OF THE 20TH CENTURY. IT IS THE WELL-SPRING OF A RADICALLY DIFFERENT KIND OF ART. YET, KANDINSKY HIMSELF, DID NOT REALISE IT AT THE TIME. ‘I WAS DISSATISFIED WITH THE PICTURE AND SO DID NOT NUMBER IT OR INSCRIBE IT AT THE BACK, AS I ALWAYS USED TO DO,’ HE WROTE DECADES LATER. ‘BUT WHEN I SAW IT AGAIN AFTER YEARS ,I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH IT.’ "PICTURE WITH A CIRCLE" BECAME A MILESTONE IN THE HISTORY OF VISUAL CULTURE, WHICH SWIPED AWAY OLDER PRECONCEPTIONS IN ART.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), a Russian painter and art theorist, pioneered abstract art. Originally a lawyer, he shifted to art in Munich, where he joined the avant-garde Phalanx group. Influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, Kandinsky's distinctive style emerged, leading to some of the first purely abstract paintings. In 1911, his influential book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" explored the spiritual dimensions of art. He played a key role in the Bauhaus movement and settled in France during World War II. Kandinsky's legacy is defined by his innovative use of color and form, influencing modern art theories and leaving a lasting impact on abstract expressionism.
