Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida - William E.B. Starkweather Fishing, 1909 - On Paper
Limited Edition of 50
This landscape details the rocky coast of the Cape of San Antonio was painted in 1905 on Sorolla’s third visit to the Mediterranean resort. He had fallen in love with Jávea, a small town on the Costa Blanca in Alicante, almost ten years previously. The jagged rocks are brought to life with strokes ranging the length of the artist’s palette, encompassing yellows, oranges and red, blues, greens and violet. The head is that of his pupil the American painter William E. B. Starkweather who was fishing by the sea. The young painter Starkweather asked to study with Sorolla and moved to Spain in 1903 from New York and spent three years with the Spanish master before embarking on a three-year independent study in Italy.
