This vivacious oil sketch represents an elegant Spanish courtyard garden adorned with seamingly ancient marble remains. Sorolla highlights the explosion of colour and the play of light on the pond and the façade of this sumptuous villa. This sketch is inscribed and dedicated in Spanish to “my friend Huntingdon”,and dated 1909, when Sorolla was residing in and near Barcelona. Archer Huntingdon dedicated his life and considerable family resources to forming one of the world’s great collections of Hispanic art and literature in the United States. He much admired the work of Sorolla and soon befriended him. He also became his most fervent patron and commissioned or collected dozens of his works.
